Nieke Lemmens

Nieke Lemmens (Maastricht, 1963) strives for a simple, painterly language. She feels connected to tradition, which she simultaneously questions in her work. Thus, she takes the work of Donald Judd, Piero della Francesca and Impressionism, among others, as research area to expound on their meaning in our time. .

She continues to marvel at what paint on paper is capable of. This ability is explored, stretched and challenged again and again. In recent years, she has been fascinated by the connection of painting with space. Consequently, the
two-dimensional work often grows into a spatial state of being. There arise temporary installations in which the viewer can dwell. Colour and the arrangement of colour remain a constant here.

The whole process of thinking, researching, making-as well as rubbing the casein paint and making the frames herself-to placing in a space, is part of her work. The work on display is only a brief, tangible moment in the adventure she has embarked on, the final destination of which is never given.
