Natascha Waeyen
I was born in 1971 in Roermond and grew up in Buggenum. In 1988, I started at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht and studied monumental design and graduated as a visual artist. I then studied at the Edinburgh College of Art in Edinburgh, Scotland, for a year and obtained a postgraduate diploma in drawing & painting. Since then, I have lived and worked in Maastricht.
In 2024, I joined Het Werkgebouw. We are a makers collective based in the former Opel garage on the river Meuse. I see myself as a draughtsman, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. In 2023, I also joined the Dutch Circle of Drawers.
At the art academy in Maastricht in 1993, I swapped all the usual drawing materials for wire to add more dimensions to my drawings. The structure of iron wire, often aviary wire, continues to fascinate me. This does not mean that I no longer draw on paper at all. Drawing on paper, I explore the possibilities towards what it could become three-dimensionally or as a soldered drawing. I explore. With pen (and ink), unsuspected independent drawings thus emerge.
My work can be seen throughout the Netherlands and sometimes abroad at exhibitions, in galleries, at art events and museums and in public spaces on roundabouts and in nature.
