Mireille Brouwer
Mireille Brouwer (1969, Heerlen, NL) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Maastricht. After studying at the Stadsacademie voor Plastische Vormgeving (ABK) Maastricht, she developed a practice that has stretched between the Netherlands and the United States for more than 20 years. This transatlantic dynamic is at the heart of her work, which focuses on themes of identity, transience and urban narratives. She works in a variety of media: from sculpture, painting and photography to drawings on cardboard, installations and cross-disciplinary collaborations in music, film and literature.
Brewer’s installations and sculptures combine mass-produced objects with handmade forms in plaster, jute, silicone and foam. In doing so, she creates layered environments that balance between chaos and play. Her work functions as a temporary refuge-a quiet, sometimes raw form of resistance to social unrest. The “ugly” aesthetic of discarded materials is deployed as a carrier of new, tangible meaning.
In New York, she worked closely with musician Gary Lucas, leading to hybrid projects merging visual art and live music. Their recent project BLCKLT, premiering at Bar Lumière Maastricht in October 2025, combines sculpture, drawing, film and performance.
Since 2024, Brouwer has operated under the name mireillebrouwerprojects-a platform that reflects her layered, collaborative and ever-evolving practice. Her work has been shown at Bonnefanten Museum and SAC Maastricht and van Bommel van Dam Museum Venlo, among others.
