Michael Krupp

Michael Krupp (Aachen, 1954) explaining his work:

The motifs, which originate from a landscape, were digitally roughly screened in order to “dedensify” them, so to speak, and create empty spaces. It is about playing with associations and perception as well as structure and rhythm. How many reference points does the eye need, and what works as a blank space? It is a playing field for calm and questioning visual relationships into the depths.
The motifs served as dot grids for screen printing and for foils. The dots were cut out individually from these foils and then painted in, again and again, until their color was right. This process of producing the templates and transferring them to canvas became a slow, meditative activity during the work.
That is why I deliberately decided not to use a machine, such as a laser, to create the print or grid templates perfectly and quickly. I did not want the perfection of such templates, but wanted to work freely and spontaneously, also to allow for mistakes.
Other works consist of colored paper dots applied to gauze fabrics and painted dots. The grid resolution determines the size and color of the dots. Through the gauze, the dots seem to float in front of a diffuse space. The boundaries become blurred.
I was also concerned with the question of the extent to which a mutual exchange between digital processes and simulation on the one hand, and analog, traditional, and physical image design on the other, influences and expands the actual painterly work and changes our view.
