Famke Storms

Famke Storms (Heerlen, 1997) graduated as an autonomous visual artist from Maastricht Institute of Arts in 2020. There, as a figurative painter, she made installations of objects originating from her studio, in which everything that came into being was appropriated by her as a so-called ‘event’. After the Art Academy, she continued the search for her events through collaborative projects such as Atelier Karton and more recently: Mobiel Atelier.

Artist Statement
In my practice, I call my work ‘events’. By this I mean the literal events in my studio. By creating a kind of chaotic atmosphere and cleaning up as little noise as possible, combinations of different materials arise that I could not have predicted beforehand. What I find interesting about this is the moment I appropriate the events and how in that process things become coated with human character traits, through the alternation of actions I perform. By positioning things differently, for example, they can be imbued with tragedy, happiness or other traits. The function disappears: that information is lost during the making process. I currently use this working method as an attitude during my work as an artist and project leader in my studio on wheels called: Mobile Atelier. In it, I work with groups of children with whom I go through a creative process for weeks. Because the location is changeable, the themes and things we resonate with (emotionally) are also changeable. This always culminates in events and questions that we could not initially imagine. We question, speculate and explore during the making process.

Mobile Atelier (2024- present)
By driving along schools and other institutions with my mobile atelier, I work on creative processes with schoolchildren on a project basis. As a visual artist, working with children interests me and the pedagogical knowledge inextricably linked to it. As a result, themes such as authorship, community and materiality move as a thread through my artistic practice.
