Christiane Steffens

Christiane Steffens is a visual artist based in Maastricht, the Netherlands, where she
was born in 1956 and continues to live and work. She studied at the Maastricht
Academy of Fine Arts, with a degree in both visual arts and art education.
Her work moves between abstract and figurative, often shaped by historical themes or
language-based forms. In one strand of her work, she draws inspiration from local
women of the past—such as Elisabeth Strouven and Aldegonda Hoeberechts—
translating their stories into powerful visual narratives. In more recent pieces, she
explores the hidden structures within letterforms, using cut colored paper and screen
printing to build layered, rhythmic compositions.
Her art has been shown in cultural venues such as Theater aan het Vrijthof, Bureau
Europa, Marres, and Centre Céramique. Alongside her visual work, she also illustrated
books such as De moeder van de Kommel, hosted art workshops in her own studio and
at educational institutions such as Maastricht University.
