Ton Slits

In addition to spatial work (installations and work in public spaces), the oeuvre of Ton Slits (*1955) also consists of paintings and collages, which are characterised by a strong spatial character.

The formal language he uses fits within a range of icons that, in this hypervisual era, plays a clearly present role. In part, we recognise a contemporary visual language, derived from computer games and icons. that challenges the viewer to look attentively and carefully.

What is the deeper meaning behind the external appearance of the work?

Some guidance is offered, but at the same time the viewer is led astray. Deliberately, it seems. After all, symbols do not mean the same thing to everyone.

Ton Slits has a long list of museum and gallery shows. His work is incorporated in public and private collections.

Marieke Severens Gallery works with Ton Slits since 2025.
